Walnut Creek, Calif. — The Contra Costa County Republican Party raised $150,050.85 between its federal and state accounts in 2019, out-raising the Contra Costa Democratic Party by nearly 2.5 times, beating every other Bay Area county Republican Party, and ranking as the fourth highest grossing county Republican Party in California behind San Diego, Orange, and Kern, according to reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission and California’s Secretary of State last month.

“Republicans in Contra Costa county are fired-up about supporting Republicans for local office in a way we’ve haven’t seen in recent memory,” said Contra Costa Republican Party Chairman, Matt Shupe. “Despite not having any Republicans elected to partisan office, we’ve been able to out-raise multiple counties that do, putting us behind only the biggest Republican strongholds in California.”

Most of the Contra Costa Republican Party’s contributions, $131,800.85, came from nearly 600 individuals into its federal account, not businesses or PACs.

“These funds go directly to supporting our efforts to get local Republican candidates in Contra Costa County elected, by funding voter registration and ballot harvesting, to sending out slate mailers, text messages, and digital ads,” Shupe said. “We’ve found that Contra Costa voters are fed-up with regional Democratic leaders failing to adequately address homelessness, crime, BART’s on-going issues, traffic, and the Bay Area’s outrageous cost-of-living, and have an appetite for Republican candidates in the upcoming election to finally solve the problems.”

At 34-years-old, Shupe is the second youngest county Republican Party chairman in California. He was unanimously elected chair in March 2017, was unanimously reelected in January 2018, and is up for reelection on March 10, 2020. Shupe’s mission as chair has been to recruit quality Republican candidates for local office and raise adequate funds to support their elections.
